Como sabemos, podemos expresar cifras numéricas de dos formas distintas: utilizando números cardinales y números ordinales en inglés.

Lo cierto es que los números ordinales en inglés se utilizan más frecuentemente que en español. Por esta razón, conviene repasar su uso y su forma para utilizarlos correctamente.
En cuanto a su uso, los números cardinales en inglés se emplean para dar orden a situaciones, objetos o personas. Por su parte, los números cardinales se utilizan para indicar una cantidad determinada.
¿Cómo se forman los ordinales?
Los números ordinales en inglés se forman generalmente de dos maneras:
- añadiendo el sufijo -th: ten (10) – tenth
- sustituyendo el prefijo -ty por -tieth: twenty (20) – twentieth
Los primeros tres números ordinales son completamente irregulares: first (1), second (2), third (3). Además, existen otros con pequeñas irregularidades a la hora de escribirlos: fifth (5), eighth (8), ninth (9), twelfth (12).

Cuando escribimos un número cardinal con cifras, debemos añadir las dos últimas letras del cardinal. 2nd, 3rd, 50th, 61st…
¿Cuándo se utilizan los números ordinales en inglés?
- Fechas: Today is the 1st of November. Her birthday is on the 29th.
- Secuencias: He came third in the race. This is the first time it happens to me.
- Birthday celebrations: A person’s 15th birthday is an important celebration in Mexico. She had a nice party for her twenty-third birthday.
- Siglos: During the 19th century. The Renaissance was a period in European history from the 14th to the 17th century.
- Kings and Queens: Edward I (Edward the First), Henry III (Henry the Third).
- Pisos de un edificio: The office is on the seventh floor. We live on the second floor.
